An interest in art and design led Dagný to study printing
Dagný Dís Bessadóttir is enjoying her printing internship at Prentmet Oddi. Iðan Education Centre went on-site to visit Dagný and spoke with her instructor in the trade, Marínó Önundarson.
She was aiming for graphic communication, but after a visit to the print shop, she found it more interesting to specialize in printing instead. She has a great interest in shapes, colors, and textures and enjoys finding the best outcome by experimenting and then holding the physical object in her hands. She says she received good training in prepress and design in Adobe programs during her foundational design studies at VMA in Akureyri. From there, she moved to Reykjavík and enrolled at the Technical College in the School of Information Technology, where she gained strong insight into print preparation. “You learned the whole chain, which is very useful,” says Dagný. Marinó, who works both as a teacher at the Technical College and a printer at the Prentmet Oddi print shop, says the basics of the trade are taught in the classroom, but it is important to get companies to collaborate in study periods to sharpen the knowledge before students start their apprenticeships. This creates a living interest in the profession.
