An absolute explosion in 3D motion design

An absolute explosion in 3D motion design

Designer Steinar Júlíusson says that even beginners can start creating 3D motion design after mastering certain basic skills. He talks about a new course starting next week and the most interesting things in the 3D motion design industry right now.

Steinar Júlíusson teaches 3D motion design in After Effects and Cinema 4D. In the course, participants will learn to design simple 3D animations that capture attention and are useful in corporate marketing or media.

The course will cover the fundamentals of designing 3D animations. Students will receive guidance in solving simple tasks and build a good foundation in using the Cinema 4D Lite program, which is part of the Adobe After Effects animation software. Steinar Júlíusson is an experienced and successful motion designer. He has worked for H&M, Acne Stockholm, Unicef in Iceland, the Reykjavík City Theatre, and Absolut Vodka. Steinar has previously taught at the Iceland University of the Arts and the prestigious Berghs School of Communication.

Why is 3D motion design a necessary tool in your arsenal?

“Motion designers today need to be able to work in a fairly broad field and deliver projects across various media. Being able to incorporate 3D into videos can significantly increase their value.”

“What is the trend in this type of design, who uses it? In what context?

“There has been a huge and significant development in 3D motion design in recent years. Previously, these tools were very specialized and required a long time to master the technology. Today, those who develop the software for 3D motion design are constantly making it as accessible as possible. This allows newcomers to start creating 3D designs after mastering certain basic skills.”

Many assume beforehand that this is a complex subject, but is that necessarily the case?

“A program like Cinema 4D, which we will get to know in the course at IÐAN, can grow with you. It is designed for both beginners and more advanced users. It is essential to get a little insight into the typical workflow when working with 3D design. After that, a whole world of opportunities and possibilities opens up within 3D design.”

Can you name an example of 3D motion design that you think is cool and inspiring? From the international scene? Icelandic?

“There has been an absolute explosion in this sector in recent years. One production company that can be mentioned is Buck in New York. They have been leaders in this field and are very skilled, for example, at blending 3D motion design with traditional motion design and have worked with all the major brands.

Not so long ago, Brandenburg created a colorful and ambitious 3D motion ad for Domino's Mega Week that is a feast for the eyes and might even make you hungry.”

“Here is an example of an ad that Buck made for the company Mailchimp. Here, 3D and 2D motion design are artfully spliced together. The texture and style are reminiscent of the so-called claymation technique, which uses real models and puppets; the most famous example of this is the Wallace and Gromit films. In this Mailchimp ad, only computer technology is used.”

Who will benefit from the course?

“This will be a true expedition for those who have little to no experience with 3D motion design but are fascinated by it and want to satisfy their curiosity. This course could provide students with the tools and equipment to take their first steps into the world of 3D motion design.”

The course will be offered both in-person at Vatnagarðar 20 and as distance learning via Teams. Students will receive supplementary materials during the course, as well as a recording of the stream after they have completed the course, with access to it for 30 days. Register here.
