Bergþór Ingi Sigurðsson, a construction technologist, wrote his BSc thesis at Reykjavik University on methods for installing and sealing around windows and doors.
In his thesis, he discusses the requirements, guidelines, development, methods, and common mistakes made during window installation.
During his studies, Bergþór always cycled past the Valsreitur construction site and noticed that the contractors working there each had their own method for installing windows. None of them did it the same way. “I found that interesting and, in fact, strange,” says Bergþór, “and I wanted to look into it further.”
Here, he covers, among other things, the requirements for windows in Iceland and whether they can withstand the stress of the Icelandic weather. Rain, wind, and pressure have a huge impact on windows, along with temperature changes, he says.
