The Battle for Icelandic
Did anyone think the work of Icelandic linguists was a quiet and uneventful job? There's quite a buzz around Eiríkur Rögnvaldsson, Professor Emeritus of Icelandic Linguistics, who is our guest on the podcast 'Augnablik í iðnaði' on Icelandic Language Day.
He is not afraid to take on battles and criticism but wants to do so in a constructive and tolerant way. Eiríkur tells us about the importance of language technology for the public and for companies. Language technology is the foundation for using language in the interface of computers and various applications. The ability for applications and computer equipment to use Icelandic is a prerequisite for the language to thrive, and Eiríkur reminds us that the responsibility is ours. If there is no will to use the Icelandic language, then the battle is lost.
