Building a Green Future - Sustainable Construction
A collaborative project between the government and construction industry stakeholders for more environmentally friendly construction
Þóra Margrét Þorgeirsdóttir, Managing Director of Construction and Sustainability at HMS, is part of the project management of a working group that, in addition to HMS, includes representatives from Green Building Council Iceland, the Federation of Icelandic Industries, the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration, the Environment Agency of Iceland, the Icelandic Association of Local Authorities, and the Ministry of Social Affairs.
The group was tasked with developing realistic improvements and presenting an action plan regarding the carbon footprint of the construction industry. The total emissions from the construction industry are estimated to be around 30-40% of the country's total carbon emissions, so there is an urgent need to map the situation as soon as possible.
In February 2022, the results of an assessment of the construction industry's emissions were published, and on June 9 of the same year, the goals and actions were presented.
In this informative chat, Þóra Margrét discusses, among other things, the goals and some of the available methods to minimize emissions from the construction industry. These include the establishment of Askur – the construction research fund, a revision of the concrete section of the building regulations, and more.
