Building a Greener Future

Building a Greener Future

Þóra Margrét Þorgeirsdóttir, a specialist at the Housing and Construction Authority, is the project manager for Building a Greener Future. The project is intended to publish a roadmap for environmentally friendly construction by the year 2030.

The project is a collaboration between the government and the business sector and is based on the government's climate action plan, says Þóra. The Housing and Construction Authority (HMS) is leading the project in collaboration with the Federation of Icelandic Industries (SI), Green Building Council Iceland, the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration, the Environment Agency of Iceland, the Ministry of Social Affairs, and municipalities. Stakeholders who work directly within the construction industry's value chain are also involved.

Þóra says that the project's objective is to assess emissions from the construction industry in Iceland, establish goals and a dashboard to reduce emissions, and define related actions. The final product will be a roadmap for sustainable construction.

A very enjoyable and informative chat with Þóra about a green future in the construction industry. She herself has adopted a zero-waste lifestyle and translated the book No Waste.
