Education at Vatnajökull National Park

The time and location of training is the biggest challenge

Ragnheiður Björgvinsdóttir, HR Manager, joins Eva Karen Þórðardóttir for a light and enjoyable chat about training matters at Vatnajökull National Park, which is the largest national park in Western Europe, covering 15% of Iceland. The national park extends across eight municipalities.

The number of year-round staff working at the national park is around 50. Summer is a very busy time, with an additional 70 full-time equivalent positions spread across the country. Training is therefore quite a challenge.

“Training for summer staff is quite routine,” says Ragnheiður, but in addition, staff need to be trained in, among other things, first aid, nature, green issues, driving modified vehicles, and more.

Here, Ragnheiður discusses how the company analyses training needs and sets up its offerings with regard to circumstances and time. They also chat about feedback on training and which methods work best in the ever-changing environment of the national park.
