Visit to Eimverk Distillery
Eimverk Distillery is a family-run business that produces whisky, gin, and brennivín from Icelandic barley.
Eimverk was founded in 2009 when the owners became convinced they could produce spirits from Icelandic barley. Two years later, a distillery was built, and in 2014, the first product was launched: a gin named Vor. It was very well received from the start, which helped the company considerably in its early years.
Flóki, one of Eimverk's main brands, was launched in late 2014 as a young malt. A three-year-old whisky was then brought to market in 2018. Eva María Sigurbjörnsdóttir, Eimverk's production manager, thinks it is unlikely the company will produce a 12-year-old whisky. “I foresee that seven to eight years will be our best age,” she says. Eimverk sells most of its products in foreign markets.
Eimverk produces all its products from Icelandic barley, which the owners grow themselves on their own land. They also grow rhubarb and caraway there, at least in years that are not so windy that the caraway plants fall over.
