Iceland on the podium at the European Championship
Gunnar Guðmundsson, a competitor in industrial control, won a bronze medal.

The Icelandic national team has returned home after a pleasant and successful week at the EuroSkills competition, which was held in Herning, Denmark, this week. Today, the President of Iceland, Halla Tómasdóttir, will receive the team at Bessastaðir. The national team's performance is particularly impressive this year, with Gunnar Guðmundsson, a competitor in industrial electrical installations, winning a bronze medal.

The award ceremony and closing ceremony took place on Saturday evening, where it was revealed that Gunnar had scored 719 points in the competition. He was only two points away from the silver medal, which went to Martin Riegler from Austria with 721 points, while the gold went to Philip Svensson from Sweden, who scored 737 points.

Two other Icelandic competitors received a special recognition, the Medal of Excellence, for outstanding performance.

  • Andrés Björgvinsson, who competed in Culinary Arts, finished in 9th place.
  • Daniel Francisco Ferreira, competing in Electrical Installations, achieved 5th place.

In addition, Hildur Magnúsdóttir, competing in Painting and Decorating, received a special recognition for speed and refined workmanship in the competition itself.

The competition featured 38 vocational and technical skills. Iceland had representatives in 13 of them, in addition to 14 "experts" who served as coaches and judges in the competition. The Icelandic group consisted of 41 people in total.

Here you can see a large number of Icelanders who showed up to cheer on the competitors. Such support makes a huge difference.

Iðan Education Centre strongly supported its trades that participated this year. “Participation in a competition like this provides our outstanding professionals with valuable experience as well as an opportunity to get to know colleagues from Europe. We can be extremely proud of the Icelandic team that represented Iceland this year. The performance was magnificent and the team spirit was fantastic,” says Vilborg Helga Harðardóttir, Managing Director of Iðan Education Centre, who followed the competition and cheered on the Icelandic competitors along with a large group of professionals who support education and continuing education in industrial, trade, and technical fields.
