Icelanders should live in sustainable houses
Finnur Sveinsson and Gísli Sigmundsson discussed sustainability in the construction industry
Last Thursday, IÐAN, in collaboration with Græn byggð (Green Building Iceland), held its second lecture on sustainability in the construction industry. "There was no need for talk, we just had to get on with it," said Finnur Sveinsson, environmental scientist and consultant, about the decision he and his wife, Þórdís, made to build the first Nordic Swan Ecolabelled residential house.
"Icelanders produce environmentally friendly energy, live off clean and natural products, fish and agricultural goods, and so on, and of course, we should also live in eco-friendly houses. That's the final piece of the puzzle for a pure and clean Iceland," according to Finnur. Gísli Sigmundsson says he completely avoids toxic materials and strives to improve his purchasing of building materials every day. Gísli also went over how he had to adapt to new work processes when it came to building in an environmentally friendly way, although there were no radical changes. He is a strong advocate for tradespeople working and building sustainably after this project.
