Informational Meeting on the Assessment of Prior Learning

Informational Meeting on the Assessment of Prior Learning

On Thursday, January 9th, IÐAN Education Centre will host an informational meeting about the recognition of prior learning. The meeting begins at 5:00 PM and will be held at the IÐAN Education Centre premises at Vatnagarðar 20 in Reykjavík. All are welcome.

Assessment of prior learning is a way to evaluate the skills and knowledge that can be acquired in the labour market for academic credit. The assessment can potentially shorten your studies and be an incentive to complete them.

The following trades are scheduled for assessment of prior learning at IÐAN in the spring of 2020, provided there is sufficient participation:

  • Auto mechanics, car painting and auto body repair
  • Carpentry, masonry and horticulture
  • Culinary arts
  • Welding

The conditions for participating in an assessment of prior learning are being 23 years of age and having 3 years of confirmed work experience in the relevant trade. This method has yielded good results, as many participants in the assessment of prior learning have continued their studies and completed a journeyman's examination after the assessment.

Assessment of prior learning is carried out in collaboration with the Education and Training Service Centre and is based on the principle that it is natural to assess existing skills regardless of how they were acquired. The assessment of prior learning is based on the idea that learning is valuable and that it should be documented regardless of where it was acquired.
