Learn about the MSc in Welding Engineering at Cranfield University
There are major developments in the study of metal and mechanical engineering. In the UK, master's level studies in welding are offered.
Sigursveinn Óskar Grétarsson, Head of Metal and Mechanical Trades, and Hilmar Brjánn Sigurðsson, a welding specialist at IÐAN Education Centre, recently visited Cranfield University in the UK to learn about its MSc programme in Welding Engineering. This is a specialised postgraduate programme that provides students with in-depth knowledge of modern welding technology, materials science, and automation. The programme is intended for both recent engineering graduates and experienced welding specialists who want to enhance their skills in manufacturing technology and materials processing.
The teaching includes lectures, practical instruction, and research. The programme is modular and can be pursued alongside work. The curriculum includes modern welding technology and automation, materials science and welding properties, design and quality management of metal welding, and digital monitoring and process control.
Students get access to advanced laboratories with the latest equipment, including technology such as WAAM (Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing), in which Cranfield University is a world leader.cranfield.ac.uk
Admission requirements and flexibility
Interestingly, this programme makes exceptions regarding admission, and work experience and specialist knowledge in welding are assessed as equivalent to a BSc degree.
Cranfield University has a strong network of connections with companies such as Airbus, Rolls-Royce, and GE, which ensures students have access to real industrial projects and increases their employment opportunities.
In the video below, Dr Graeme Barritte briefly talks about the work at Cranfield University, and Hilmar Brjánn describes the structure of the programme.
