Loans for Specialised Studies at the Upper Secondary Level

Loans for Specialised Studies at the Upper Secondary Level

In certain cases, LÍN provides loans for specialised studies at the upper secondary school level.

Eligible vocational education in Iceland includes certified trades and other vocational programmes at the upper secondary level of at least one year, which have been confirmed by the Minister in accordance with Act No. 92/2008 and also meet all of the following conditions:

  • that the programme has received a positive review from the relevant trade council, • that the programme is not remunerated according to a collective wage agreement in excess of the basic subsistence for student loans in Iceland, cf. Art. 3.1.1 and 3.2,
  • that the programme concludes at the third qualification level,
  • that a comparable programme is generally not available at the university level in Iceland.

Apprentice wages are treated like other income according to the Fund's rules and will lead to a reduction in the student loan.

General studies at an upper secondary school leading to a matriculation examination or a comparable examination are not eligible for a loan. However, upper secondary school students may be entitled to an equalisation grant if they are studying away from home.
