A Reminder About the Sustainability of Paper
Guðmundur Ingi Guðbrandsson, Minister for the Environment and Natural Resources, was presented with an educational publication on paper sustainability in the Republic Garden today.
When discussing the sustainability of paper and the printing industry, it is important to distinguish between facts and sweeping generalisations. The paper industry is a global leader in sustainable resources, renewable energy, and recycling rates.
Despite this, myths about paper persist among consumers.
Today, Guðmundur Ingi Guðbrandsson, Minister for the Environment and Natural Resources, was presented with an educational publication about the sustainability of paper in the Republic Garden. The publication reviews generalisations and facts concerning paper production. For example, the fact that the paper and printing industry in the Northern Hemisphere ensures healthy and growing forests and uses respected certification systems to guarantee that the paper is produced from sustainable forests. The educational publication is issued in collaboration with Iðunn Education Centre, the Federation of Icelandic Industries, Grafía, and paper importers, and is based on research from the World Economic Forum and promotional material from the international organisation Two Sides, which aims to inform about the sustainability of the paper and printing industry.
There is a great need for information about the sustainability of this industry, which has been under attack and often unfairly portrayed as an environmentally unfriendly option. Printing is also increasingly moving abroad. For example, 78% of book titles are now printed in other countries.
