A Strong National Team Heading to Denmark

Thirteen young and promising competitors will take part in EuroSkills in Herning, Denmark, at the beginning of September.

Everyone on the Icelandic national team has shown outstanding results in their trade, and most of them were victorious at the Icelandic Skills Competition, which took place in Laugardalshöll last March.

Iceland has representatives in automobile technology, baking, hairdressing, painting, plumbing, electronics, electrical installation, industrial control, carpentry, cooking, restaurant service, and graphic design.

The competitors representing Iceland at EuroSkills will be:

  • Welding: Sigfús Björgvin Hilmarsson
  • Plumbing: Ezekiel Jakob Hanssen
  • Electronics: Einar Örn Ásgeirsson
  • Electrical Installation: Daniel Francisco Ferreira
  • Industrial Control: Gunnar Guðmundsson
  • Carpentry: Freyja Lubina Friðriksdóttir
  • Cooking: Andrés Björgvinsson
  • Restaurant Service: Daníel Árni Sverrisson
  • Graphic Design: Jakob Bjarni Ingason
  • Baking: Guðrún Erla Guðjónsdóttir
  • Hairdressing: Bryndís Sigurjónsdóttir
  • Painting: Hildur Magnúsdóttir
  • Automobile Technology: Adam Stefánsson

Never before have so many competitors participated on behalf of Iceland. At the last European championship, which took place in Gdansk, Poland, there were 11 competitors in total.

Psychologist joins the team

The manager of the Icelandic team is Sigurður Borgar Ólafsson, a master waiter. He says there is a good spirit in the group, despite the demanding training process and the upcoming competition. His role is to keep the group together, be on hand to help them, and be alert to the needs of each individual. “I need to know what they need before they know it themselves. The atmosphere in the group is very good, and all the competitors are excited about the task ahead. The preparation is on par with what you see in national sports teams,” he says, mentioning that for the first time, a psychologist is accompanying the Icelandic national team to support the competitors mentally during the tournament. “We should have always done this, but Dr. Erlendur Egilsson, a psychologist, is coming with us and has given the competitors valuable tools to work with that will also serve them well in the future.”
