Gréta Þorkelsdóttir and Júlía Runólfsdóttir, graphic designers and owners of Signatúra Books, discuss the future of print, books, and book art, as well as their event at DesignMarch where guests will have the opportunity to view printed works displayed in structures by Vala Jónsdóttir.
“A digital book is just a PDF file, not a book. We care about books,” say Gréta Þorkelsdóttir and Júlía Runólfsdóttir in a new podcast episode of Augnablik í iðnaði (A Moment in Industry). They co-founded Signatúra Books in 2019 as a publishing house for printed works. The company has since evolved, and they now design books and share their knowledge on creating books and pamphlets. Gréta and Júlía discuss the future of print and a certain misunderstanding that can arise when comparing printed works to digital ones. “One doesn't exclude the other; it's a different experience,” they point out, reminding us that tablets are not at all environmentally friendly. Printed works will continue to exist due to both their aesthetic and practical value. People have a need to own, look at, and touch things. Furthermore, printed works are good sources. “Printed books are one of the best forms of citation that exist,” they say. At DesignMarch, they will be hosting an exciting event related to printmaking, bookmaking, and graphic design, opening the “Signatúra Bookasafn” (Signatúra Book Collection). The event opens at Hafnartorg on May 19th. They have requested submissions of book works, which they will display in structures built by Vala Jónsdóttir. The main focus of the “Bookasafn” is to showcase works by young artists, designers, and photographers.
