Micro-courses and digital credentials in the hotel and restaurant industries

Micro-courses and digital credentials in the hotel and restaurant industries

An agreement was recently finalized for the participation of Iðan Education Centre in the development project Upskilling the EU Hospitality Industry with Portable Micro-Credentials (MCEU).

The project received a grant of 900,000 euros from the EU's KA2 – Erasmus+ grant programme and aims to develop digital micro-learning and micro-credentials to support continuing education and upskilling for staff in the hotel and restaurant sector.

The project is a three-year initiative led by UCN (University College of Northern Denmark) in Denmark, with participants from five countries. It is worth noting that in addition to IÐAN, the Icelandic Travel Industry Association is also participating. The work is mostly carried out online via Microsoft Teams, with only seven in-person meetings planned for the entire group.

Helen Williamsdóttir Gray, leader of international projects, is managing the project on behalf of IÐAN. Helen says that an awakening is taking place within the European Union regarding the development and implementation of micro-learning and digital credentials for education. There is an understanding that such an approach makes it simpler for people to acquire the necessary skills for participation in a constantly evolving labour market. Recognised digital credentials then ensure that skills are documented in a conclusive manner and are thus transferable between workplaces, countries, or even continents. The unfortunate reality is that the forgery of certificates and credentials of all kinds is a massive industry.

Helen also stresses that it is important to note that micro-learning does not replace traditional education or courses but is purely supplementary training to meet both the wishes of individuals and the demands of the labour market.

IÐAN Education Centre provides continuing education for professionals in various industries. It offers a wide range of courses and training in numerous fields, both specialised and general. IÐAN's policy is to enable companies and staff to acquire new knowledge and skills in line with changes and needs at any given time.
