On 15 July 2018, a new act on data protection and the processing of personal data entered into force in Iceland. The act is based on an EU regulation that significantly increased the requirements for the protection of personal data. The act also placed increased obligations on companies regarding the handling and processing of such information, and we were curious to know how the implementation has gone over the past few years. For example, have there been any court cases because of this?
There is no doubt that there are enormous opportunities in collecting information about consumers and using it for commercial purposes, and such collection is common. But what does that mean for the individual? “If someone compiles my digital footprint, how widely is it distributed, where is the information stored? Then you understand more the importance of having rules that everyone must follow, because otherwise we are not ensuring the rights of the individual in this digital world,” says Dóra Sif Tynes.
The key is thorough information and education. Individuals must be informed about what is being collected, for what purpose, and how that information is stored. “Everyone who works with personal data must follow the law; there are no exceptions, whether for small or large companies,” says Dóra.
