Winners of the 2023 Culinary and Service Apprentice of the Year Competition

An impressive group of students took part in the competition, which is a preliminary for the Nordic Student Competition 2024.

On Tuesday, October 24th, the competition for Culinary and Service Apprentice of the Year 2023 took place. The competition was held at the Hotel and Food School in Kópavogur. As expected, the competition was very exciting, and only a few points separated the contestants in the end. When all was said and done, two service apprentices and two culinary apprentices won the competition and will compete on behalf of Iceland in the Nordic Apprentice Competition, which will be held in Helsinki from April 25-27, 2024.

The winners in service were:

Daníel Árni Sveinsson from Monkeys Restaurant

Elvar Halldór Hrannar Sigurðsson from Moss Restaurant at the Blue Lagoon

The winners in culinary arts were:

Andrés Björgvinsson from Hotel Reykjavík Grand

Sindri Freyr Ingvarsson from Vox Hilton

The competition was structured so that the culinary apprentices started with a written exam, after which they cooked a starter and a main course for four people, using celeriac as the main ingredient for the starter and Icelandic leg of lamb for the main course. The service apprentices also began with a written exam, after which they set a formal table for two guests with a floral arrangement, two dinner napkin folds, and one lunch napkin fold on the side. Then, the apprentices paired wine with a four-course menu, mixed two cocktails, and flambéed fruit.

All contestants received certificates and gifts. The culinary apprentices received a beautiful gift box with oils and vinegars from Garri wholesale, and the service apprentices received a beautiful wine decanter courtesy of GS Import. The winners also received a magnificent trophy to keep.

IÐAN congratulates them on their success.
