Standards are all around us

Standards are all around us

They are tools where company managers have access to the best available knowledge at any given time to achieve better results.

Standards are all around us, without us necessarily being aware of them. They cover everything under the sun and can be international, European, Icelandic, Danish, or specific to individual industries.

Helga says it's no coincidence that our credit cards or smart payments work everywhere in the world, that our smart devices can communicate with each other, that a metre is the same length everywhere, and that we can buy standard-sized tyres. These are all standards that make our lives easier. "Their importance for the general public is that we are safe, our things work, and they are of a minimum quality," she says.

Standards are created in technical committees and working groups of standards bodies. The time it takes to create them varies. If the subject matter is complex, requiring expert knowledge and even the latest research, and there are many stakeholders, this can be a process that takes a long time, even years.

For industrial companies, standards are primarily useful as a tool to achieve greater and better results in productivity, increased quality, as a channel for innovation, and to comply with requirements for the functionality, quality, and safety of products and systems.
