Summer Visit to Sólheimar

IÐAN Education Centre decided to break from its formal schedule and made its way to Sólheimar to talk to the programme makers at ÚPS! (Útvarp Sólheimar – Sólheimar Radio) and found out that they dream of starting a television station. “For that to happen, Pétur would ideally have to sell his car,” says Leifur Þór Ragnarsson, one of the programme makers, jokingly. Pétur Thomsen, a photographer and artist, is the station manager of ÚPS! Many things came up during this summer visit by IÐAN Education Centre to Sólheimar: singing and joy, a story about a dog that knows how to go down a slide, and some extremely perilous programme making.

Most of the programme makers were present for a chat, except for Kristján Atli Sævarsson, who was busy. Kristján hosts an entertaining show where he goes over the day's significant events. Ágúst Þorvaldur Höskuldsson, usually called Gústi, has a special interest in genealogy and is incredibly quick to trace the ancestry of those he chats with. This talent is driven by Gústi's interest in people and their history. Gústi particularly enjoys singing on the radio. María Jacobsen is approaching eighty but is the liveliest of women and manages the Sólheimar Boccia team, practises acting, and sings, just like Gústi. Gunnar Einarsson, often called Reverend Gunnar by his colleagues, preaches the gospel in his broadcasts. Gunnar is concerned with two things above all else: truth and love.

Leifur Þór Ragnarsson is a great music enthusiast and says there are many questions about Daði, whom he himself is a big fan of, as ÚPS! receives a large number of song requests. He finds it particularly amusing to get a request for the song Kúkur í lauginni (Poo in the Pool) by the band Súkkat. And then there's Ármann Eggertsson, who is probably the media personality who has risked the most for a broadcast in the entire country, when he broke his leg right before a broadcast but didn't tell anyone and finished the show before he would let anyone look at it.
