Young Apprentice Bakers in 4th Place at World Championship
Iceland had two representatives at the World Championship for Young Bakers, Finn Guðberg Ívarsson and Matthías Jóhannesson.
The competition took place in Berlin, and the pair finished in 4th place. This was the first time Iceland participated in the competition.
Haraldur Árni Þorvaldsson, a vocational teacher in the baking trade, was the boys' coach. He said he noticed them right away in their first year at the school. “They were always thinking differently; they could never just make a regular French loaf, they had to make some kind of long-fermented French loaf. They were always thinking and using their minds. That's what you want to see in competitions like this.”
Finnur said that he and Matthías were very organized in the competition and combined two recipes into one to save time. It worked out well. Their strength lay in their professionalism and composed demeanor, but they also made sure to have fun, playing music and keeping the atmosphere light.
Finnur and Matthías are only 17 and 19 years old, and this is a fantastic achievement for these young baking students. It will be exciting to follow them in the future.
