Information Technology in Construction - New Programme
Ingibjörg Kjartansdóttir works as a BIM Development Manager at Ístak and tells us all about the new study programme in construction disciplines at Reykjavík University.
This autumn, Reykjavík University is offering a new diploma programme for professionals in the construction and civil engineering industry, such as construction managers, construction engineers, technicians, and others. The programme is 30 ECTS credits and is taught over two semesters. It is specifically designed for anyone who wants to study alongside their work.
In the programme, students will learn about, among other things, the BIM (Building Information Modeling) methodology, which is based on computer-generated 3D models and databases for structures and projects. BIM is used extensively in Iceland, and the Icelandic Construction Authority, for example, requires all new projects to be designed in BIM. An increasing number of projects, especially larger ones, utilise BIM to some extent.
Ingibjörg says there are numerous opportunities in the interplay between information technology and civil engineering. In many cases, the technology exists, but implementation is difficult and time-consuming. The fact is that new technology often calls for significant transformations in processes and mindsets, and the first steps can prove challenging. The programme is not least intended for all those who want to strengthen their skills in this area.
