New materials, new technology, and the increased integration of different sectors were among the things that attracted the most attention at the FESPA Global Print Expo 2026 in Barcelona.
The Fespa conference brought together experts from the printing, signage, and automotive industries to present innovations in digital printing, film application, vehicle wrapping, and surface protection. It was clear that the lines between traditional industries are becoming increasingly blurred, as the same technological solutions and working methods are useful in both the printing and automotive sectors.
Demand for broader expertise than before
Among the highlights of the show were new generations of car wraps, paint protection film (PPF), more sustainable printing solutions, and increased automation in production. The demand for specialised staff with knowledge of design, pre-press, production, and installation has increased significantly, and this is reflected in the development of education and continuing training throughout Europe.
The leaders of the printing and automotive industries, Kristjana Guðbrandsdóttir and Sigurður Svavar Indriðason, familiarised themselves with the key focus areas in Barcelona and will subsequently collaborate on cross-disciplinary educational projects that are in line with this development.
“It’s interesting how fast the development is,” says Sigurður Svavar, leader of the automotive trades, who says that there are numerous opportunities in the industry. Kristjana Björg, leader of the printing and media trades, says it’s impressive to see how many opportunities await young people in the printing trades in a much wider field than ever before.
A car like new for 10 years
Sigurður Svavar met Vaidas Gecas, a friend of Iceland, at Fespa and took the opportunity to talk to him about paint protection films for cars.
Vaidas has come to Iceland and taught the technique of protecting cars from the weather and gravel on Icelandic roads. “I've been to Iceland and your roads are tough,” says Vaidas, adding that car owners can protect their cars so well with this method that they look like new after 10 years of driving.
New on the agenda this autumn
On the agenda for the autumn semester are two related lectures on innovations at Fespa. On 1 September, the topic will be developments in sign making, printing on corrugated cardboard, and film applications, and registration for the lecture is open. On 3 September, the education on innovations in advertising printing continues, covering interesting opportunities in the industry, with a special focus on how personalised production and textile printing are transforming advertising printing. Registration is also open for that lecture, and you can register here.
