Baker Ísak Árni Guðmundsson did an internship at Jumbo Bakery in Aarhus and says the experience was enriching.
An internship abroad with Erasmus+ gives vocational students the opportunity to get to know new working methods, a different work environment, and a new culture. Ísak Árni recently spent three months in Aarhus through Erasmus+ and learned many new things in the baking trade at the friendly and popular Jumbó Bakery in the city.
“I had always wanted to try living in another country, and this was a great opportunity to do so. I also couldn't pass up the chance to work and learn in a bakery in another country on an Erasmus grant with almost no financial risk.”
He received a warm welcome, and Ísak didn't feel that foreign students were treated any differently than the local staff. One of the things that had the biggest impact on Ísak was the work culture. “The Icelandic work culture is often characterized by a fast pace and trying to do as much as possible in the shortest amount of time. It was very refreshing to experience a workplace where people just worked at a calm pace and could take their time to do things as well as they wanted.”
“What had the biggest impact on me was how relaxed everyone seemed to be. I often feel like there are a million things I need to do right away, preferably at the same time, but while I was abroad, I could let go and enjoy myself more than before.”
When Ísak is asked to describe his Erasmus+ experience in just three words, the answer comes quickly: “Memorable. Wonderful. Hyggeligt.”
Ísak advises those who are considering applying for an internship to start their preparations early, especially the search for accommodation.
“I gave up a little when I was looking for housing and ended up in an apartment that wasn't particularly comfortable. I regret a bit not putting more effort into the search.”
He encourages everyone who is considering going abroad for an internship to go for it: “Just do it! Whether you go for one month or half a year, it's an invaluable experience. Opportunities like this don't come around every day, so if you have the chance, take it!”
